Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

A hypothetical form of AI that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across any intellectual task at or above human level, rather than being specialized for specific tasks.

AGI remains a theoretical concept, though the timeline for its development has shortened in expert surveys. The median AI researcher prediction for when AI will surpass humans at every task shifted from 2060 to 2030. Companies like OpenAI and DeepMind have stated AGI as their explicit goal. No current AI system qualifies as AGI — even the most advanced large language models lack true reasoning, planning, and common sense understanding.
