Colorado AI Act

A US state law regulating the use of high-risk AI systems in consequential decisions, requiring developers and deployers to conduct impact assessments and take reasonable measures to prevent algorithmic discrimination.

Signed in May 2024 with enforcement beginning February 2026, the Colorado AI Act is among the most comprehensive US state-level AI regulations. It requires developers of high-risk AI to provide documentation on training data, known limitations, and intended uses. Deployers must conduct annual impact assessments, implement human oversight, and notify consumers when AI is used for consequential decisions in areas like employment, housing, education, and insurance. The law has influenced AI regulation discussions in other US states and represents the state-level approach to AI governance in the absence of comprehensive federal legislation.
