AI Ethics

The branch of ethics focused on the moral implications of developing and deploying AI systems, addressing fairness, accountability, transparency, privacy, and the broader societal impact of AI technology.

AI ethics has evolved from an academic field to a corporate imperative and regulatory requirement. Over 70 countries have published AI ethics guidelines. IEEE, ACM, and the OECD have developed AI ethics frameworks. However, only 32% of organizations using AI have formal ethics governance. Key debates include the ethics of AI-generated content, autonomous weapons, surveillance, and the concentration of AI power among a few companies. The field is growing — AI ethics research papers have increased 5x since 2018, and AI ethics officer roles are emerging as a new job category.
