AI Governance

The systems of rules, practices, and processes by which AI development and deployment are directed and controlled, spanning organizational policies, industry standards, and government regulation.

AI governance operates at multiple levels: organizational (internal policies and review boards), industry (voluntary commitments and standards), national (regulations like the EU AI Act), and international (UN AI advisory body, G7 Hiroshima Process). Over 70 countries have published national AI strategies. The challenge is that governance lags capability — AI models advance faster than rules can be written. Key governance frameworks include the NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, and the OECD AI Principles. Effective governance must balance innovation with risk management across rapidly evolving technology.
