Autonomous Weapons

Weapons systems that can select and engage targets without human intervention, representing one of the most contentious applications of AI technology in military and defense contexts.

Over 60 countries have called for international regulation of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS). The UN has been discussing a potential treaty since 2014 but has not reached consensus. The US, Russia, and China have invested heavily in AI-powered defense systems. AI-enabled drones have been used in combat in Ukraine, Libya, and other conflicts. The Campaign to Stop Killer Robots advocates for a preemptive ban. The debate centers on whether meaningful human control over lethal force decisions is a moral imperative or whether AI could make more accurate targeting decisions than humans.
