The use of AI to detect and remove harmful, illegal, or policy-violating content across online platforms, including hate speech, misinformation, explicit material, and spam at internet scale.

Major platforms process billions of content items daily using AI moderation — Meta's AI systems review over 3 billion pieces of content per day. AI content moderation catches approximately 95% of violations before human review. However, AI struggles with context, sarcasm, cultural nuance, and novel forms of harmful content. The EU's Digital Services Act and similar regulations require platforms to invest in effective content moderation. The human cost is significant — content moderators who review AI-flagged content experience high rates of psychological trauma. LLMs are increasingly used for more nuanced content analysis, though they introduce new challenges around bias and consistency.
