Data Center

A facility housing computer systems and infrastructure used to process, store, and distribute data — increasingly built specifically for AI training and inference workloads.

Data centers now account for 2.5% of global electricity consumption. Over 12 GW of new capacity is under construction in the US alone, with the largest planned facilities requiring up to 700 MW — enough to power a city of 500,000 people. Water consumption is also significant: Microsoft's data centers used 6.6 billion liters in 2023 for cooling. AI-optimized data centers are projected to quadruple by 2030.
