Frontier Model

The most capable and advanced AI models at any given time, typically trained with the largest compute budgets and achieving state-of-the-art performance on benchmarks.

Frontier models represent the cutting edge of AI capability. Training them requires massive compute — GPT-4 consumed an estimated 3,600 MWh of electricity. The first model exceeding 10²⁶ FLOP was xAI's Grok-3 in February 2025. Epoch AI projects 10+ models above that threshold by 2026 and 200+ by 2030. Frontier model development is concentrated among a handful of companies with billions of dollars in compute budgets.
