Data Privacy in AI

The principles and regulations governing how personal data is collected, stored, and used in AI training and inference, addressing concerns about consent, surveillance, and data breaches.

GDPR has been the primary framework governing AI data privacy in Europe, with fines reaching hundreds of millions of euros. Italy temporarily banned ChatGPT over data privacy concerns in 2023. The EU AI Act adds AI-specific data governance requirements on top of GDPR. Training data often contains personal information scraped from the internet without explicit consent. Techniques like federated learning and differential privacy aim to enable AI training while protecting individual data. The tension between AI's appetite for data and privacy rights remains one of the central regulatory challenges globally.
