Digital Watermark for AI

An invisible or subtle identifier embedded in AI-generated content that allows its origin to be traced back to the AI system that created it, aiding content authentication and misinformation detection.

Google's SynthID embeds imperceptible watermarks in images generated by its AI models, surviving cropping, compression, and editing. The C2PA standard enables provenance tracking for AI-generated content. The Biden administration's Executive Order on AI required watermarking research. Meta implemented invisible watermarks for images generated by its AI tools. While current watermarking techniques can be circumvented by determined actors, they raise the bar for casual misuse. Robust, tamper-proof watermarking remains an active research area with significant implications for combating deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation.
