Superintelligence

A hypothetical AI system that vastly exceeds human cognitive abilities across all domains — scientific creativity, social skills, and general wisdom — representing the most extreme form of advanced AI.

The concept was popularized by philosopher Nick Bostrom in his 2014 book. Expert surveys show widely varying predictions for when superintelligence might emerge, if ever. OpenAI and DeepMind have stated that preparing for superintelligence is part of their mission. The debate centers on whether superintelligence would be controllable and beneficial or an existential risk. Yann LeCun (Meta) argues current AI architectures cannot achieve superintelligence, while others believe scaling current approaches could reach it within decades. The question of how to maintain meaningful human oversight of a superintelligent system remains open.
