Codex

OpenAI's AI model specialized for code generation, which powers GitHub Copilot and can translate natural language instructions into working code across dozens of programming languages.

Codex, derived from GPT-3 and fine-tuned on billions of lines of public code, was the foundation of GitHub Copilot when it launched in 2021. Copilot now has over 1.8 million paying subscribers and generates an average of 46% of developers' code. Studies showed Copilot users completed tasks 55% faster. While Codex as a standalone model has been deprecated in favor of GPT-4, its impact on software development productivity catalyzed an entire AI coding assistant market projected to reach $14 billion by 2027.
